2008-2009 Schedule

All sessions will be held at the Bank of America City Center on Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Because this is an outdoor ice-skating facility, in the event of inclement weather, a cancellation decision will be made by 1:00 p.m. on that particular skating day. All supporting partners will be notified by phone of a cancelled skating session. Volunteers will be notified by e-mail. The BOA City Center phone number is 331-5544.

 NEWPORT SKATING SCHEDULE: 2008-2009 SEASON

Please note that all Newport sessions will be held on Tuesday’s from 3:15 to 5:30 at St. George’s School in Middletown, RI.  EXCEPT ON ORIENTATION, PLEASE SEE BELOW.

Starting with week #2. ALL on-ice sessions will follow the same format:

  • 3:15 children go directly to the assigned locker room to sign in, get their skates, helmets, sweatshirts, and gloves on.

  • 3:30 children will be escorted onto the ice by their coach and volunteers for a 25 minute lesson and must stay in that lane for the duration of their lesson.

  • 4:00 cones are removed, followed by a 30 miunte “free skate” to practice what they have learned.

  • 4:30 children return to assigned locker room to remove skates, enjoy a light snack, and listen to a guest “life skills” speaker for 5 or 10 minutes.

  • 5:00 children must ALL sign out and are free to leave with parents or after school supporting partners.

Session #1 consists of 7 weeks, including orientation.

9/30/08-Week #1. ORIENTATION STARTS @ 3:30 FOR VOLUNTEERS ONLY.
REGISTERED CHILDREN @ 4:30 will meet the Skate for Joy team while they become familiar with the facility and go over the important safety rules.  All children must sign in upon arrival and out before leaving with parents or supporting partners on a weekly basis.

10/7/08 - Week #2. First day on-ice!!! Children will be placed in classes according to age or ability.  Please be patient as the first on-ice week is always hectic until we find our groove!!

10/14/08 - Week #3. Second on-ice session should find children more comfortable and relaxed.

10/21/08 - Week #4. On-ice.

10/28/08 - Week #5. On-ice.

11/4/08 - Week #6. On-ice.

11/11/08 - Week #7. NO SKATING THIS WEEK.

11/18/08 - Week #8. On-ice last week.  All students are tested for the US Figure Skating Badges.

PROVIDENCE SKATING SCHEDULE: 2008-2009 SEASON

Session #1. Consists of 8 weeks, including orientation.  Registered children will meet every Thursday in the skate rental room at 4:00 pm.  Please note, all children must sign in upon arrival and out before leaving on a weekly basis.  Skate For Joy follows the US Figure Skating Basic Skills Program.  This consists of 25 minutes of instruction followed by 25 minutes of free skate.

11/20/08 - Week #1. Fitting & orientation off-ice.  Meet the Skate for Joy volunteers and coaches.  Go over important safety rules while getting familiar with the facility.  Get fitted for skates and helmets, enjoy a light snack, and any questions shall be addressed at this time.

11/27/08 - No Skating - Happy Thanksgiving

12/4/08 - Week #2. First day on-ice!!! Please be patient-this is always very hectic.

12/11/08 - Week #3. On-ice.

12/18/08 -  Week #4. On-ice, no instruction.  Annual holiday pizza party, fun skate with Santa.

12/25/08 - No Skating - Merry Christmas

1/8/09 - Week #5. On-ice.

1/15/09 - Week #6. On-ice.

1/22/09 - Week #7. On-ice.

1/29/09 - Week #8. On-ice. Last skate of Session 1. Testing for US Figure Skating badges.

SKATE FOR JOY SESSION #2- PROVIDENCE

Consists of 6 weeks.

2/5/09 - Week #1.  On-ice

2/12/09  - Week #2. On-ice.

2/19/09  - No Skating - School Vacation

2/26/09 - Week #3. On-ice.

3/5/09 - Week #4. On-ice.

3/12/09 - Week #5. On-ice.

3/19/09 - Week #6. Last skate of Session 2. Testing for US Figure Skating badges.

3/26/09 - SIXTH ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET  4:00-5:30 PM
RI Convention Center, One Sabin Street, Providence, RI

ALL CHILDREN REGISTERED IN THE NEWPORT AND PROVIDENCE PROGRAMS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.  MANDATORY ATTENDANCE FOR ALL SKATE FOR JOY VOLUNTEERS & COACHES.
